Train Where You Are. Become Who You Want.

At Legacy Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we know adults learn best in a program that meets them where they are—whether you’re brand new, returning after a break, or ready to take your training to the next level. You don’t need experience, perfect fitness, or a certain “type” of background to start. You just need a willingness to show up.

That’s why we offer Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Adult Muay Thai—structured, coach-led classes that are challenging, beginner-friendly, and built for real progress. Each class helps you grow physically through skill and conditioning, while also building mental toughness, confidence, and consistency that carries into everyday life.

Train With The Experts

Our instructors, (Professor Brendin Phillips, & Professor Kelton Hungate,), are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts in the Marcelo Alonso lineage. Assisting them is Asst. Coach Rebekah Norman, who has been training in Jiu-Jitsu since 2016 and works with our Littles BJJ kids programs.

Core Benefits

Self-Defense That Works

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai give adults practical, usable self-defense skills—not just theory. You’ll learn how to stay calm under pressure, protect yourself at close range, and build real awareness and control in challenging situations.

And as your skills grow, so does your confidence. You’ll carry yourself differently—stronger, sharper, and more capable—on the mats and in everyday life.

Full-Body Fitness with Purpose

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai give you full-body conditioning without the boredom of a traditional workout. You’re not just lifting weights or running in place—you’re learning real skills while your body gets stronger.

BJJ builds strength, grip, mobility, and endurance through controlled grappling and constant movement. Muay Thai adds cardio, footwork, power, and athletic conditioning through striking and combinations. You’ll sweat, improve fast, and leave every class feeling stronger and more accomplished.

Leave Better Than You Came

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai are one of the best ways to reset your mind after a long day. Training gives you a healthy outlet for stress, helps you clear your head, and leaves you feeling calmer, stronger, and more in control.

They also build discipline and humility in the best way—through consistent effort and real progress over time. You learn to stay patient, keep showing up, and improve step by step. That growth doesn’t stop on the mats—it shows up in your mindset, your confidence, and how you handle challenges in everyday life.

Community, Consistency, and Clarity

Training at Legacy isn’t something you do alone. You’ll be surrounded by positive coaches and training partners who support you, push you, and help you stay consistent—especially on the days motivation is low.

It’s also one of the best mental resets you can give yourself. When you step on the mats, everything else quiets down. You train, you sweat, you improve—and you leave feeling clearer, lighter, and ready to take on the rest of life.

Clear Instruction. Real Progress.

Starting something new can feel intimidating—but at Legacy, you’ll never be thrown into the deep end. Our coaches guide you step-by-step with clear instruction, safe training, and a structured approach that helps beginners feel successful from day one.

Whether you’re learning your first basics or building toward bigger goals, you’ll always know what to work on, how to improve, and how to progress at a pace that makes sense for you.

Adult Martial Arts FAQ

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?Expand

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and self-defense system that uses leverage and technique over strength and size, making it effective for people of all ages and body types, including women and kids. It focuses on grappling and ground control to position an opponent and achieve a submission. BJJ also provides a challenging full-body workout that improves strength, flexibility, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness.

What should I wear for BJJ training? Expand

For trial classes, wear comfortable athletic clothing and we'll loan you the appropriate gear. Once you sign up, you'll need to purchase a gi (uniform). We have these uniforms for sale in our pro shop. A gi consists of a jacket, reinforced pants, and belt. Adults need to wear a rash guard (or tight fitting shirt) and spandex shorts underneath. For no-gi classes, you'll need fight/board shorts with no pockets or zippers and a rash guard.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good exercise and will it help me get in shape? Expand

BJJ provides an excellent full-body workout combining aerobic and anaerobic exercise. You'll improve flexibility, strength, cardiovascular fitness, balance, coordination, and muscular endurance while burning fat and building muscle tone. Many students find BJJ more enjoyable than traditional gym workouts, leading to more consistent training and better results.

Do I have to compete in BJJ tournaments? Expand

No, competition is completely optional. Most people train BJJ for fitness, self-defense, and personal growth without ever competing. If you're interested in testing yourself in competition, we encourage and support that, but there's absolutely no requirement or expectation to compete.

What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi BJJ training? Expand

Gi training involves wearing the traditional uniform (gi/kimono) and incorporates grips on the jacket and pants as part of the techniques. No-gi training is done in shorts and a rash guard without the gi, focusing more on body control and resembling MMA-style grappling. Both have unique benefits, and we offer both options at LJJA to give you well-rounded skills.

How are belt promotions handled at Legacy Jiu-Jitsu Academy? Expand

We follow the traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu approach where instructors subjectively determine when a student is ready for advancement based on technical skill, knowledge, mat time, and attitude. Belt promotions aren't scheduled but are awarded when you demonstrate readiness. This applies to both our kids and adult programs.

For years, my whole family and I have been going to this gym, and it has been amazing. We are all in the Muay Thai program and have moved up through the ranks, making friends who feel like family. The program has really helped us grow in the discipline. The tough training, along with the supportive atmosphere, has taught us dedication and hard work. Our instructors are very knowledgeable and always encourage us to do our best. The gym is always very clean, showing how much the management cares about keeping a safe and healthy place for everyone. Because of this, we can focus on our training without worrying about anything else. For me, the health benefits have been incredible. I have lost over 60 pounds since joining, thanks to the great workouts and constant motivation from the instructors and other members. My family's overall fitness and well-being have gotten so much better, making us stronger and healthier. In short, the Muay Thai gym has become a big part of our lives, giving us a supportive community, helping us grow in the discipline, and improving our health. We highly recommend it to anyone looking to get fit and improve themselves.

Our child has been learning BJJ at Legacy BJJ for more than 2 years now. This BJJ academy is very family friendly. The owners and professors/coaches are professional and kind, and they care about safety, sportsmanship, respect, and efforts! I remember vividly the first time at their intraschool tournament, before the start, the professor spoke publicly to all adults present, about the proper conduct to watch a Jiu jitsu match. It’s a great reminder that we respect each other regardless of the outcome. It’s a positive place for children and adults. We highly recommend. In addition to offering high quality martial art classes, the owners have a heart to the community. They routinely fundraise and donate to charities. They provide the space to a FREE women self defense class on Friday nights. I highly recommend any woman (16+) to check it out.

We signed our boys up at Legacy almost 2 years ago. It was one of the best choices we’ve ever made! We were struggling with our oldest sons ADHD and were looking for a positive outlet. 2 years later and he’s a different kid. He’s found something he’s passionate about. He is driven, focused and he’s made huge strides in every aspect of life. Our younger son has had tremendous growth as well. Both boys have started competing this year and are just obsessed with the sport. The gym and members have become like a second home and family. The coaches and professors are all amazing and professional. The owners are wonderful and really strive to make a difference in the community. The facility is clean. Our kids have all made such strong, positive, lasting friendships. A year ago we signed our oldest daughter up as well and it has made such a fantastic difference in her life. Can’t wait until our baby girl is old enough to start as well, she already has her eye on a pink gi 🩷 since starting I have noticed my kids make such strides in sportsmanship, respect, discipline and self confidence. It’s really such a family friendly place and everyone there really cares about these kids.

Great Experience for Kids and FamiliesAs a parent, I couldn’t be happier with Legacy Jiu Jitsu in Richland. The coaches are patient, professional, and excellent with kids—they focus on discipline, confidence, and respect just as much as technique. My child feels supported, challenged, and excited to come to class. The gym is clean, well-run, and has a very positive atmosphere. I highly recommend Legacy Jiu Jitsu to any parent looking for a safe, structured, and encouraging place for their child to train.

German Medina

I have been at Legacy Jiu-Jitsu Academy since I began grappling several years ago. The atmosphere and coaching have kept me at this gym since then. I have formed lifelong friendships through this sport and Legacy. I have also brought in coworkers to train, who went on to love the sport. In practice, you will find a solid mixture of experienced grapplers and beginners. The experienced grapplers are more than willing to show the new members the ropes during training and keep them safe during sparring.I highly recommend this gym.

Kat Gorman

It’s not just that the staff is professional and kind or that the classes are geared towards EVERYONE. I’ve never been so scared walking into a business for the first time and been made to feel so completely welcome and comfortable within literal seconds. Walking into Legacy was the best thing I ever did.
