Grapple, Grow, and Laugh To Greatness!

The Littles BJJ program is designed specifically for kids ages 4–7 and is split into two classes, Level One & Level Two, so we can tailor instruction to each child’s developmental level and learning pace. This age group learns best through movement, repetition, and fun—so our classes are built to help them build body awareness, coordination, balance, and dexterity while being introduced to the basics of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Through games, drills, and beginner-friendly grappling movements, kids learn foundational skills like safe falling, proper positioning, and simple techniques in a way that feels exciting and achievable.

Core Benefits

Young children training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Legacy Jiu-Jitsu Academy.

Little Ears, Big Growth!

One of the biggest things we develop in our Littles program is listening and focus. At ages 4–7, learning to slow down and follow directions takes practice—and martial arts is a fun, positive way to build that skill.

Kids learn to respond to coaching cues and stay engaged through simple, structured activities. These habits often carry into everyday life, supporting better focus at school, calmer behavior at home, and more confidence in new situations.

Kind Kids. Strong Values.

In our Littles program, kids learn what respect looks like—listening to coaches, using kind words, and being a great teammate on the mats.

They also build discipline in age-appropriate ways like practicing patience, showing self-control, and learning how to work well with others. Because class is a group experience, students naturally grow their social skills while building confidence around peers.

Move, Sweat, and Smile!

Littles classes keep kids moving through games, drills, and beginner-friendly grappling. They’ll build strength, balance, coordination, and endurance—without it ever feeling like a workout.

It’s high-energy fun that helps kids develop healthy habits while burning off energy in the best way possible.

Littles BJJ FAQ

What is Littles BJJ and how is it different from regular kids' martial arts? Expand

Littles BJJ is specifically designed for children ages 4-7, focusing on body awareness, motor skill development, and basic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals. Our curriculum is age-appropriate with shorter attention span activities, games that teach technique, and an emphasis on fun while building foundational skills that prepare them for our Kids BJJ program at age 8.

What should my child wear to Littles BJJ class? Expand

For trial classes, any comfortable athletic clothing works fine. Once enrolled, your child will need a gi (martial arts uniform) which you can purchase from our pro shop. Under the gi, a t-shirt or rash guard is recommended. Your child will train barefoot on our mats.

What will my child learn in Littles BJJ classes? Expand

Your child will develop body awareness, balance, coordination, and dexterity through age-appropriate BJJ techniques. They'll also learn important life skills including following directions, taking turns, respect for instructors and peers, basic self-defense concepts, and confidence. Classes incorporate games and activities that make learning fun and engaging.

How long are Littles BJJ classes and how often should my child attend? Expand

Littles BJJ classes are shorter than our older kids' classes to match young children's attention spans. We recommend starting with 2-3 classes per week to build consistency and see steady progress. Check our Class Schedule page for specific times, or contact us to discuss the best training frequency for your child.

Is it safe for young children to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Expand

Absolutely! BJJ is one of the safest martial arts for children because there's no striking, it's all grappling and controlled movements. Our Littles program emphasizes safe technique, control, and body awareness. All instructors are SafeSport certified and trained to create a safe, nurturing environment. Classes are closely supervised with age-appropriate activities.

Will Littles BJJ help with my child's behavior and focus at home and school? Expand

Yes! Parents consistently report improvements in their children's focus, ability to follow instructions, respect for authority, and self-control after starting Littles BJJ. The structured environment, clear expectations, and positive reinforcement in our classes translate to better behavior in other areas of life. Many teachers notice improvements in the classroom as well.

For years, my whole family and I have been going to this gym, and it has been amazing. We are all in the Muay Thai program and have moved up through the ranks, making friends who feel like family. The program has really helped us grow in the discipline. The tough training, along with the supportive atmosphere, has taught us dedication and hard work. Our instructors are very knowledgeable and always encourage us to do our best. The gym is always very clean, showing how much the management cares about keeping a safe and healthy place for everyone. Because of this, we can focus on our training without worrying about anything else. For me, the health benefits have been incredible. I have lost over 60 pounds since joining, thanks to the great workouts and constant motivation from the instructors and other members. My family's overall fitness and well-being have gotten so much better, making us stronger and healthier. In short, the Muay Thai gym has become a big part of our lives, giving us a supportive community, helping us grow in the discipline, and improving our health. We highly recommend it to anyone looking to get fit and improve themselves.

Our child has been learning BJJ at Legacy BJJ for more than 2 years now. This BJJ academy is very family friendly. The owners and professors/coaches are professional and kind, and they care about safety, sportsmanship, respect, and efforts! I remember vividly the first time at their intraschool tournament, before the start, the professor spoke publicly to all adults present, about the proper conduct to watch a Jiu jitsu match. It’s a great reminder that we respect each other regardless of the outcome. It’s a positive place for children and adults. We highly recommend. In addition to offering high quality martial art classes, the owners have a heart to the community. They routinely fundraise and donate to charities. They provide the space to a FREE women self defense class on Friday nights. I highly recommend any woman (16+) to check it out.

We signed our boys up at Legacy almost 2 years ago. It was one of the best choices we’ve ever made! We were struggling with our oldest sons ADHD and were looking for a positive outlet. 2 years later and he’s a different kid. He’s found something he’s passionate about. He is driven, focused and he’s made huge strides in every aspect of life. Our younger son has had tremendous growth as well. Both boys have started competing this year and are just obsessed with the sport. The gym and members have become like a second home and family. The coaches and professors are all amazing and professional. The owners are wonderful and really strive to make a difference in the community. The facility is clean. Our kids have all made such strong, positive, lasting friendships. A year ago we signed our oldest daughter up as well and it has made such a fantastic difference in her life. Can’t wait until our baby girl is old enough to start as well, she already has her eye on a pink gi 🩷 since starting I have noticed my kids make such strides in sportsmanship, respect, discipline and self confidence. It’s really such a family friendly place and everyone there really cares about these kids.

Great Experience for Kids and FamiliesAs a parent, I couldn’t be happier with Legacy Jiu Jitsu in Richland. The coaches are patient, professional, and excellent with kids—they focus on discipline, confidence, and respect just as much as technique. My child feels supported, challenged, and excited to come to class. The gym is clean, well-run, and has a very positive atmosphere. I highly recommend Legacy Jiu Jitsu to any parent looking for a safe, structured, and encouraging place for their child to train.

I have been at Legacy Jiu-Jitsu Academy since I began grappling several years ago. The atmosphere and coaching have kept me at this gym since then. I have formed lifelong friendships through this sport and Legacy. I have also brought in coworkers to train, who went on to love the sport. In practice, you will find a solid mixture of experienced grapplers and beginners. The experienced grapplers are more than willing to show the new members the ropes during training and keep them safe during sparring.I highly recommend this gym.

It’s not just that the staff is professional and kind or that the classes are geared towards EVERYONE. I’ve never been so scared walking into a business for the first time and been made to feel so completely welcome and comfortable within literal seconds. Walking into Legacy was the best thing I ever did.
