Build Skills. Build Confidence. Build Their Legacy.

Legacy Jiu-Jitsu Academy, located in Richland, WA, is dedicated to teaching kids the foundations of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai in a fun, structured, and family-friendly environment.

Our experienced instructors create an inclusive space for children ages 8–12, helping them build confidence, coordination, and real martial arts skills through age-appropriate training. Between our Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes and Kids Muay Thai classes, there’s something for every child—whether they’re brand new or ready to grow their skills even further.

By encouraging positive habits early, you’re giving your child tools they can carry for life—on the mats and beyond.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an art, self-defense system, and a fitness program. It has proven to be the most practical and effective self-defense system in the world. It relies on leverage and technique, rather than strength and size. This allows you to defend yourself against much bigger, strong attackers. As a result, BJJ is a great art for everyone.

Kids Muay Thai

Muay Thai is often called “The Art of Eight Limbs” because it uses the hands, shins, elbows, and knees as primary weapons. A Muay Thai practitioner—known as a nak muay—learns to strike using all eight points of contact, creating a powerful and well-rounded stand-up martial art. This is very different from Western boxing, which focuses on two points (the fists), or many sport-based martial arts that rely on four points (hands and feet).

Core Benefits

Earned Confidence. Real Self-Esteem.

Kids build confidence at Legacy by learning real skills and seeing steady progress each week. As they earn stripes, master techniques, and overcome challenges, their self-esteem grows naturally—because it’s based on effort, improvement, and achievement.

Training also builds discipline through structure and consistency. Kids learn how to stay focused, manage frustration, and keep going when something feels difficult—creating strong habits that support growth in every area of life.

Strong Bodies, Great Friends!

Our kids classes keep students moving with drills, games, and partner training that build strength, balance, and endurance. Between striking and grappling fundamentals, kids develop coordination, agility, and overall athletic ability—while staying active and engaged.

Just as important, they build friendships along the way. Working with partners teaches teamwork, communication, respect, and encouragement—helping kids feel comfortable, supported, and connected in a positive group setting.

Strong Boundaries. Stronger Kids.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai give kids practical tools to feel safer and more capable in everyday situations. They learn awareness, healthy boundaries, and age-appropriate self-defense habits—like using their voice, staying calm, and making smart choices when faced with conflict.

Training is also a powerful outlet for stress and emotions. Kids learn self-control, resilience, and composure under pressure, while releasing energy in a healthy, productive way—so they leave class feeling stronger, calmer, and more confident

Kids Martial Arts FAQ

What programs do you have for Kids at Legacy? Expand

Our Kids Martial Arts program for ages 8–12 includes both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. Your child can choose one program or train in both for a well-rounded martial arts experience and stronger self-defense skills—BJJ focuses on grappling and ground control, while Muay Thai teaches striking and movement.

What if my child has never done martial arts before? Will they be behind other kids? Expand

Not at all! Most kids start with zero martial arts experience. Our instructors are experienced in working with beginners and will ensure your child learns at their own pace in a supportive environment. We group students by skill level when appropriate, so everyone gets instruction matched to their ability.

What should my child wear to Kids Martial Arts classes? Expand

For trial classes, any comfortable athletic clothing works fine.

Once enrolled, your child will need a gi (martial arts uniform) for the BJJ class, which you can purchase from our pro shop. Under the gi, a t-shirt or rash guard is recommended. Your child will train barefoot on our mats.

Is the training safe for kids? What safety protocols do you have? Expand

Safety is paramount. All instructors are CPR/AED/FA certified and SafeSport trained to recognize, respond to, and prevent abuse. Our deep sanitation protocols include hand sanitizing upon arrival, nightly deep cleans and disinfecting of all surfaces, and monitoring for illness symptoms. Techniques are taught progressively with proper supervision and age-appropriate intensity.
