Women’s Defense

Get Fit, Get Strong, And Stand Up For Yourself

LEARN HOW TO EFFECTIVELY DEFEND YOURSELF. JOIN OUR FREE CLASS EVERY FRIDAY!

Women’s self-defense training at Legacy Jiu-Jitsu Academy for empowerment and safety.

Be Empowered. Be Prepared.

The best self-defense strategies and techniques work equally well for men and women, but let’s face it: Women really need them because they’re assaulted more often than men. Statistics indicate that one in three women will be the victim of some type of violent attack in her lifetime. Women also endure more incidents of verbal and sexual harassment.

Women's self-defense here at LJJA includes methods for preventing a confrontation from turning physical in the first place. Learning how to steer away from a threat may not sound as exciting as ripping out an attacker’s heart, but as they say in every beginner’s class, evading an attack is always superior to blocking an attack.

Be Ready For Anything

Learn instinct, target denial, confidence, setting verbal boundaries, non-confrontational stance, keeping a safe distance, using the element of surprise, & simple but precise techniques.

Note: This program is for adults (16+*) only.

Core Benefits

Women practicing self-defense techniques at Legacy Jiu-Jitsu Academy.

Real Confidence. Real-World Awareness.

Confidence isn’t something you’re handed — it’s something you build. In our Women’s Self-Defense program, you’ll learn practical skills that help you feel more aware, prepared, and in control in everyday situations. From understanding body language and environmental awareness to practicing simple, effective techniques, you’ll gain tools that translate directly into real life.

As your skills improve, so does your confidence. You’ll walk taller, speak more clearly, and set boundaries with certainty — not because someone told you to, but because you’ve trained for it. Confidence rooted in preparation changes how you carry yourself and how the world responds to you.

Practical Skills. Proven Techniques.

Our training focuses on simple, high-percentage techniques that work — regardless of size, strength, or experience. You’ll learn how to escape common grabs, create space, strike effectively, and defend yourself in close-contact situations using leverage, positioning, and smart movement rather than brute force.

Classes are structured, supportive, and hands-on. You’ll practice with partners in a safe environment so the techniques become natural and instinctive. The goal isn’t memorization — it’s building the ability to stay calm, react quickly, and protect yourself if needed.

Stronger Mind. Stronger You.

Self-defense training strengthens more than just your body. It builds mental resilience, emotional control, and the ability to stay composed under pressure. As you train, you’ll develop sharper focus, quicker decision-making skills, and the confidence to assert yourself in difficult situations.

Just as important, you’ll be surrounded by a supportive community of women who encourage and uplift each other. The atmosphere is positive, empowering, and free of ego — creating a space where you can grow stronger physically and mentally, while feeling supported every step of the way.

For years, my whole family and I have been going to this gym, and it has been amazing. We are all in the Muay Thai program and have moved up through the ranks, making friends who feel like family. The program has really helped us grow in the discipline. The tough training, along with the supportive atmosphere, has taught us dedication and hard work. Our instructors are very knowledgeable and always encourage us to do our best. The gym is always very clean, showing how much the management cares about keeping a safe and healthy place for everyone. Because of this, we can focus on our training without worrying about anything else. For me, the health benefits have been incredible. I have lost over 60 pounds since joining, thanks to the great workouts and constant motivation from the instructors and other members. My family's overall fitness and well-being have gotten so much better, making us stronger and healthier. In short, the Muay Thai gym has become a big part of our lives, giving us a supportive community, helping us grow in the discipline, and improving our health. We highly recommend it to anyone looking to get fit and improve themselves.

Our child has been learning BJJ at Legacy BJJ for more than 2 years now. This BJJ academy is very family friendly. The owners and professors/coaches are professional and kind, and they care about safety, sportsmanship, respect, and efforts! I remember vividly the first time at their intraschool tournament, before the start, the professor spoke publicly to all adults present, about the proper conduct to watch a Jiu jitsu match. It’s a great reminder that we respect each other regardless of the outcome. It’s a positive place for children and adults. We highly recommend. In addition to offering high quality martial art classes, the owners have a heart to the community. They routinely fundraise and donate to charities. They provide the space to a FREE women self defense class on Friday nights. I highly recommend any woman (16+) to check it out.

We signed our boys up at Legacy almost 2 years ago. It was one of the best choices we’ve ever made! We were struggling with our oldest sons ADHD and were looking for a positive outlet. 2 years later and he’s a different kid. He’s found something he’s passionate about. He is driven, focused and he’s made huge strides in every aspect of life. Our younger son has had tremendous growth as well. Both boys have started competing this year and are just obsessed with the sport. The gym and members have become like a second home and family. The coaches and professors are all amazing and professional. The owners are wonderful and really strive to make a difference in the community. The facility is clean. Our kids have all made such strong, positive, lasting friendships. A year ago we signed our oldest daughter up as well and it has made such a fantastic difference in her life. Can’t wait until our baby girl is old enough to start as well, she already has her eye on a pink gi 🩷 since starting I have noticed my kids make such strides in sportsmanship, respect, discipline and self confidence. It’s really such a family friendly place and everyone there really cares about these kids.

Great Experience for Kids and FamiliesAs a parent, I couldn’t be happier with Legacy Jiu Jitsu in Richland. The coaches are patient, professional, and excellent with kids—they focus on discipline, confidence, and respect just as much as technique. My child feels supported, challenged, and excited to come to class. The gym is clean, well-run, and has a very positive atmosphere. I highly recommend Legacy Jiu Jitsu to any parent looking for a safe, structured, and encouraging place for their child to train.

German Medina

I have been at Legacy Jiu-Jitsu Academy since I began grappling several years ago. The atmosphere and coaching have kept me at this gym since then. I have formed lifelong friendships through this sport and Legacy. I have also brought in coworkers to train, who went on to love the sport. In practice, you will find a solid mixture of experienced grapplers and beginners. The experienced grapplers are more than willing to show the new members the ropes during training and keep them safe during sparring.I highly recommend this gym.

It’s not just that the staff is professional and kind or that the classes are geared towards EVERYONE. I’ve never been so scared walking into a business for the first time and been made to feel so completely welcome and comfortable within literal seconds. Walking into Legacy was the best thing I ever did.
